Something to be Proud Of !!!

The 2006-2007 edition of the Moon varsity hockey team boldly went where no team in recent Moon history has gone – the quarter final round of the Penguin Cup Playoffs!!!

The Tigers finished the season on Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at Center Ice in Delmont as the Tigers fell to the number 4 seed Franklin Regional Panthers 5-2.

The Tigers took the lead late in the first period when Matt Reese took a shot from the point and the puck stayed low to the ice and got past the Panther's goalie.

At 10:22 of the second period, FR tied the game 1-1 on a power play goal.  Late in the second period, the Panthers scored again to take a 2-1 lead.

Although the Panthers scored early in the third period to take a 3-1 lead, our Tigers came right back when Misha Klenjyans took a slapshot that beat the Panther's goalie to make it a 3-2 game.  FR scored shortly thereafter to open their lead to 4-2 and scored again to make the final 5-2.

Additionally, congrats to all of our seniors for a fine year.  Also, congrats to this year's "Iron Men" who played in all 24 games this year:

We have a good nucleus of players who are already looking forward to the 2007-2008 season.  Good luck to the underclassmen who will carry on, and build from, the excellent season that we had this year.

And finally, to Head Coach Craig Bioni and assistants, Dennis Fleming, Dave Finnegan, and Steve Smarsh – a huge Thank You from the entire organization for a great year.  You took a group of boys and molded them into winners on and off the ice!!!

This is your intrepid reporter, signing off!!!

Playoffs Have Begun !!!!

Our Moon Tigers finished the regular season at 13-7-2 and earned a first home playoff game against Greensburg Central Catholic (10-11-1) on March 8, 2007.  The Tigers won the regular season meeting at Kirk Nevin Arena in Greensburg 2-1.

Although the Tigers dominated the play for much of the first period, GCC got the opening goal with 5:03 to go in the first period.  With a 5 on 3 power play, the Tiger's Cedric Brazeau won a faceoff in the offensive zone and got it to defenseman Matt Reese who put a shot past GCC's goalie to tie the game at 1-1.

With 6:21 left in the second period, Moon, again, had a 5-3 power play and took advantage of the situation as Pete Lyle backhanded a shot past the GCC goalie for a 2-1 lead.  Later in the second, the Tigers found themselves shorthanded and after Jon Davis  made a highlight film hit on a GCC player in front of goalie Matt Wynn, Cedric Brazeau scooped up the puck near center ice and scored on a breakaway with 56.7 seconds left in the second period.  Tigers lead 3-1.

GCC battled back in the third and scored 3 unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead with 3:38 to go in the game.  The Tigers fought back and with 2:42 to go in the third, T.J. Pompeo picked up a lose puck behind the GCC goalie and banked a shot of the back of the GCC goalie to tied the game at 4.

Moon went into the first overtime period on the powerplay, but GCC killed off the penalty to stay alive.  A few minutes later, GCC took another penalty behind the play, and Moon was on the powerplay again.  Lat in the powerplay, Zach Smith took a shot from a weird angle and it banked off a GCC defender and landed in the net giving the Tigers a thrilling 5-4 win.

The Tigers will travel to Center Ice Arena in Delmont for a second round game against Franklin Regional on Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at 5:50 p.m.

Moon (11-4-1) traveled to Ice Connections in Valencia, PA, on Monday, January 22, 2007, to take on the number 1 ranked Pine Richland Rams (13-0-0).  The Rams are the defending Class AA Penguin Cup and State Champs.  Moon handed the Rams by far their toughest game of the year.  Moon scored first to take the lead early in the second period.  PR scored twice to take a 2-1 lead, but our Tigers scored again midway through the third period.  An untimely penalty gave the Rams a power play in overtime and PR scored to take the win.  Our Tigers are now 11-5-1 over all.
