High School Hockey
The Moon Area High School hockey program fields teams at both the Varsity and Junior Varsity levels within the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League. Varsity currently plays at the AA level while the JV program plays at the JV3 level. The Varsity program last won a championship during the 2017-18 season while the JV team more recently won a championship during the 2024-25 season. While both High School teams call the Robert Morris University Island Sports Complex home for their league games both teams utilize both RMU and Baierl Ice Complex for practice purposes. Each team has a robust offseason training program which makes uses of Three Rivers Performance sports trainers for off ice conditioning and Baierl Ice Complex for off season on ice development.
Varsity Head Coach - AJ Coleman
Coach Coleman brings an extensive playing and coaching background to the Moon Hockey program. His playing career included stops with the Beaver Badgers, Pittsburgh Aviators, Pittsburgh Hornets, and Pens Elite, where he developed into a high-level player and competitor. He later advanced to the North American Hockey League (NAHL), gaining valuable experience at one of the premier junior hockey levels in North America.
Following his playing career, Coach Coleman transitioned into coaching and has built an impressive résumé at both the youth and scholastic levels. He served as a Varsity Assistant Coach at Moon, helping develop players and contribute to the program's success. He then spent time as an Assistant Coach with the Chatham University NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Team, gaining experience in the collegiate game and player development. Coach Coleman also led the West Allegheny Varsity Hockey Team as Head Coach, where he was responsible for all aspects of the program, including player development, game strategy, and team leadership. Most recently, he has served as an Assistant Coach for the Mt. Lebanon Hornets U18 AA team, continuing to mentor and develop young athletes preparing for the next level of hockey.
With experience ranging from elite youth hockey to junior, high school, and collegiate programs, Coach Coleman is dedicated to helping players reach their full potential both on and off the ice while fostering a competitive, team-first culture.
Junior Varsity Head Coach - Shane Handlovitch
Middle School Hockey
The Moon Area Middle School hockey program fields teams at both the 14 U and 12 U levels. The 14 U program plays within the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League and will play at the MS 3 level for the upcoming season. Over the 4 seasons the 14 U team has won two championships and continues to do a great job of preparing players for the fast physical style of play which is part the High School program. The 12 U program plays within the Alpha Interscholastic Hockey League and will play at the Pee Wee level for the upcoming season. Over the 4 seasons the 12 U team has won one championships and was a finalist in one season as well. The 12 U program is designed to help players transition from the developmental program to the more structured style of play expected of players within the program. Each team has a robust offseason training program which makes uses of Three Rivers Performance sports trainers for off ice conditioning.
14-U Head Coach Jared Maxin
Jared Maxin is a lifelong member of the Moon Hockey community, having played in the program from the developmental level through his senior year before continuing his career at the University of Akron. He is passionate about helping young athletes develop their skills while building confidence, character, and a love for the game. Jared brings several years of coaching experience to the program and is committed to creating a positive, competitive environment where players can reach their full potential. Hockey has always been a family tradition, with his father also playing and coaching within the Moon Hockey community, making it an honor for Jared to give back to the program that helped shape him.
12-U Head Coach Marc Pelkington
Marc started his playing career through the RMU in-house program in middle school and would go on to play in the Moon Hockey system all through high school. Throughout his high school years, Marc would play 3 years of Varsity Hockey, winning the 2017-18 PIHL Division 2 Championship with Moon. After graduation, Marc went onto to play ACHA Division 1 hockey for 3 years with Duquesne University, eventually being Team President and a Team Captain. Once his playing career finished, Marc went on to Coach as an assistant with Moon's Middle School 1 team for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. During this time the Middle School 1 team won the 2022-23 PIHL Middle School 14U Division 2 Championship and multiple middle schoolers would be able to go on to make the varsity team as freshman. This year, Marc will be the Head Coach of the Middle School 2 team and an assistant with the Junior Varsity team
